Rally Day 2026
Isaiah 11:10
10 In that day the Root of Jesse will stand as a banner for the peoples; the nations will rally to him, and his resting place will be glorious.
I was looking up the definition of Rally; here are some of the definitions I pulled up:
To mobilize or unite: Bringing individuals together to support a common cause, team, or goal.
To encourage or lift spirits: Rousing someone from low spirits, dejection, or weakness (such as helping a patient recover strength).
To support someone (“rally around “): Gathering around a person to offer aid or comfort during a difficult time
In September we celebrate Rally Day. According to the United Methodist webpage, the tradition of Rally Day has been celebrated since the 18th century. It’s a call to awareness and action. That we should rally together for Christ, the church, and our faith.
In the scriptures, Jesus tells those around him of his intent to gather and rally everyone to himself, “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem… How often I have wanted to gather your children together [around Me], just as a hen gathers her young under her wings…” Luke 13:34. Another passage in John 10:16: Jesus says, “And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.”
Jesus tells Nicodemus, “16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. (John 3:16-17). To me, this is the reason to rally to Christ. This is the equivalent of Captain America saying, “Avengers Assemble!” to me.
Rally Day is a reminder that we are called to be the body of Christ in the world. In 1 Corinthians 12, the Apostle Paul lays out the importance of each person in the church. We all have gifts and talents; each person adds to the church. With the combination of presence, gifts, and graces, and with the Holy Spirit guiding us, we can do some cool stuff that points back to Christ and helps someone get to know him better. I’m pleased that we make sure our kids are taken care of. We have an engaging curriculum called Celebrate Wonder, and we also have some of the coolest and most loving people who engage our kids and deliver the school lessons.
Our church has humble men and women in leadership and committees that keep the church moving and grooving. Wonderful and welcoming folks who come on Sundays and other events. At this point, I’m just humble-bragging about our church community. But a faith community doesn’t happen if you don’t stay in the habit of rallying together for Christ.
My encouragement for us all is to think of your gifts and talents- then, please, offer them to Christ. If you can sing, sing for the Lord. Play instruments, play games, a good artist, a cook, a baker, planner, working with your hands, __________________. I left a blank so you can fill in your gift. But whatever it is, offer it to the Lord to help build up his church - not just building, but the people. As the old hymn says, “I am, you are the church, we are the church together.” We need to build it together.
